So so excited to show this amazing Mom friend of mine some big praise and recognition (bc mom’s need more that!) today. Allison and I met a couple years ago when our kiddos were in preschool together. We had lots of mutual friends but I would say we had an instant connection (both Missouri girls <3 ) and have been able to build a solid friendship on our own. She is an amazing friend, always thinking of others, an amazing wife and momma, and one of the most creative humans I have ever met. She has taken my ideas on cake design (our anniversary cake, Sophia’s birthday cake, Max’s birthday cake) and turned them into something that was not only delicious but more than I could imagine.
Below is my interview with my sweet friend Allison Underwood from Cake•ology:
Tells us about yourself….
I’m Allison Underwood, originally from Kansas City, a wife of 11 years, mom of four children nine and under (three girls and a boy), lover of espresso, Haribo gummy bears, habanero salsa, bike riding, traveling, and long romantic walks down every isle of Target [by my self- ha ha ha] *not my original words, but so much truth* . Before moving to Dallas, I worked in community mental health while finishing up an internship at the State hospital- truly an incredible experience! From there, I got married, became pregnant with our first child, got pregnant again, and again, and again- ha!
You make the most amazing cakes! What got you started? How did you learn your craft?
Anyone who knew me back in my pre-married life, knows that I was not exactly a good cook and I definitely never baked! I was very spoiled by my mothers cooking and baked goodies, that I just enjoyed instead of learning how to make anything myself! A short time after we got married, I was trying to figure out the adult life, and would experiment with trying to cook for Geoffrey (my husband). Well, lets just say that if “nailed it” was a thing 11 years ago, I would have won for sure! Re-structured garlic bread french toast, botched mustard yellow cake balls, and a powdered sugar pie crust were just a few among many of our families favorite memories.
Where do you come up with your ideas?
Like many moms, I have had my fair share of Pinterest fails. I still love browsing through that and Instagram for inspiration, but I find most of my ideas originate from a combination of the friends, family, and customers I am baking for. I have found myself to be my own worst enemy when decorating a cake. One thing leads to another and what was supposed to be a quick and simple cake leads to hours of sculpting modeling chocolate and making a million tiny decorative pieces that wasn’t originally planned on. I just can’t help myself . My best ideas come at night, I’ve affectionately been dubbed as the “midnight baker”.
Whats your favorite way to show self love?
My favorite way to show self-love is to wash my hair more than twice a week, maybe even freshen up my braid! Ha Lets be honest, I have four kids, two cats, and a husband… what’s self-love?
How do you have ‘Selfish Mom Moments’? (massage, facial, mani)
My favorite selfish mom moments are when my husband and I make time every year to sneak away and enjoy a week of being adults!
