I LOVE THIS LADY! Elizabeth and I met through our elementary school and this amazing mom is one of the sweetest humans I have ever met. I had to share this woman with the world and I’m beyond happy she agreed!
Elizabeth has an amazing talent that leaves me a little in awe and envious at the same time. I remember as a kid always creating signs with my name or sayings in fun lettering but this lady takes it to a whole new level with her perfection in calligraphy. She truly has created an art and then taken it to a whole new level of a business, and a successful one at that!
Here’s my amazing interview with Elizabeth of Noted. By EB…
Tell us about yourself…
I’m married to Jason, whom I met at church in 2004. We have two kids, Charlotte (12) and Mitchell (9). I’m a calligrapher and at one point in my life was a pianist – played and accompanied vocalists all through high school and college and hope to get back into that some day!
You have an absolutely amazing talent! How did you get into your craft?
I took a calligraphy class in 4th grade with felt tip calligraphy markers. I fell in love with it and continued writing and practicing for the next 20 years, addressing mine and many friends’ wedding invitations along the way! About 5 years ago, I took a class with pointed pen calligraphy (where you dip the pen in ink as opposed to a felt tip marker) which really took my skill to the next level.
What is your favorite piece you have designed?
Gosh, so many to choose from! I always love the really personal pieces where the recipient of the gift is truly touched – with something I’ve done that you can not buy in a store. I have done special baby gifts, quotes & verses with special meaning and I always love doing chalkboards!
What inspires you?
Seeing other women doing what they love while still able to balance life, family, etc – or at least try their best to balance it all! When I’m feeling overwhelmed, and I see other women pressing forward towards their dreams, it inspires me to keep going.
Any advice you have for another mom looking to take her craft to the next level and make it a business?
Learn all you can! Follow other people on social media, research how to learn more, buy books & materials and practice, practice, practice! Same goes for turning the skill into a business… talk to others. I’ve been pleasantly surprised by how open and willing people are to talk about their experience and offer help & guidance along the way.
What is your favorite thing about being a mom?
Watching my kids find true joy in things they love to do… talking through real life “stuff” now that they are older; lying in bed with my kids at night and just hearing their thoughts and questions about any and every thing!
What do you find is your biggest struggle being a mom?
Keeping my cool! Being slow to anger 🙂
What is your favorite way to be ‘selfish’ or show yourself self care?
Still working on this! taking “mental health days”! Putting my “to-do” list aside for a day and going window shopping, grabbing a bite to eat, just spending time with myself! Allowing time to not focus on the check list for just a while. And I love naps 🙂
What advice would you give a new mom and the journey of motherhood?
Don’t compare! Don’t compare your child to other children and don’t compare yourself as a mom to other moms. It’s just not worth it – just say “no” to the comparison game!
Tell us what’s next in your business?!
As of just this week, actually, thanks to the encouragement of my daughter, I’m going to branch out to teaching classes! I’ve been wanting to do this for awhile, but I’ve let fear hold me back. I’m excited to give it a try first with friends, then can hopefully expand beyond that! I’ve seen such a huge surge of interest in hand lettering & calligraphy just in the last 5 years or so, and many have asked me if I would consider classes, that I just decided to go for it!
(I will be signing me and Sophia up for these classes!!!)
Probably one of my favorite interviews. <3 You can find Elizabeth and her amazing talent on IG @noted.by.eb
